An Inspired Wedding with UNICEF

With more couples saying “I do” to socially responsible weddings; UNICEF Ireland unveils its new range of wedding gifts and favours

July 2009

UNICEF Ireland has just launched its new range of Wedding Inspired Gifts and favours. This special collection gives brides and grooms an easy way to make their big day extra special for children living in the world’s poorest countries.

UNICEF Inspired Wedding Gifts are far more than ‘virtual’ gifts – they are real, life-saving and life-changing gifts that are being distributed to children and families around the world right through the year. For example, UNICEF procures vaccines for 40 per cent of the world’s children – that’s 3 billion doses a year! UNICEF is also the world’s largest buyer of mosquito nets – over 20 million nets in 2008!

So simply by adding a UNICEF Inspired Wedding Gift to their gift list, or through selecting a favours package on behalf of their guests, the bride and groom can make a big difference to children who are in urgent need of support.

There are five wedding gift packages – covering healthcare, child protection, water, HIV prevention and education respectively. The packages range in cost from €250 to €1000. These gifts are then sent on behalf of the bride and groom and/or their guests to wherever they are needed most at the time in any of the 150 countries worldwide where UNICEF operate saving children’s lives. After the gifts have been sent, UNICEF Ireland will also be able to report back to the couple and let them know what part of the world their gifts were sent to.

The happy couples who opt for a UNICEF Inspired Wedding Gift, can select their package online at www.unicef.ie, and will receive a card detailing all the package information that has been sent on their behalf to place at each table setting on the day.

Speaking about the Inspired Wedding Gift concept, Melanie Verwoerd, Executive Director of UNICEF Ireland said:

“We are so lucky to have support from people all over Ireland who take it upon themselves to give donations to UNICEF in lieu of birthday presents. We have already had many couples giving to us around this important time in their lives in the past. But in a changing environment, we are very aware that many more couples are looking for ways to make their special day extra meaningful. With a UNICEF Inspired Wedding Gift, we can help add extra significance in a very easy way, as through their gift, the couple will be providing essential items for UNICEF, which will help children not only to survive but also to thrive.”

In addition, given the nature of the challenging year ahead, these packages give UNICEF supporters who are getting married, a new way of supporting UNICEF, whilst not increasing their fiscal outgoings.

Further examples of the individual packages available to purchase as favour options on behalf of guests are outlined below. In addition UNICEF has a comprehensive inspired gift range available on www.unicef.ie starting from just €15 per gift that can be purchased as an individual wedding present.

Inspired Wedding Gift of Health

This wedding gift package costs €250 and includes 80 packets of high energy biscuits for malnourished children, 3 bicycles for healthcare workers to get where they are needed, and a first aid kit.
High-energy biscuits are a present that can help the child victims of earthquakes, floods, cyclones and other emergency situations. These high-energy biscuits have been developed to provide the nutrition children need in the wake of a disaster.
UNICEF’s first aid kit contains a whole host of equipment to treat and care for children, which can be used by health care centres, mobile health workers and also during emergencies.
UNICEF bicycles can ensure health workers reach vulnerable children in remote communities.
Inspired Wedding Gift of Protection

This wedding gift package costs €325 and includes a baby scale, 100 measles vaccinations and 100 polio vaccinations. These vaccines will protect 100 children from these two leading causes of child deaths.
Measles kills more than 600 children every day. Yet these deaths can be so easily avoided. Your gift can provide vaccines for 100 children from this killer disease.
One of the best ways to make sure malnutrition and illness are diagnosed early in very young children is to monitor their weight. So why not mark your special occasion by giving portable scales, combined with a pack of 5 weighing trousers?
With this inspired gift of 100 polio vaccines, you are protecting vulnerable children from the threat of a highly contagious and incurable viral infection.
Inspired Wedding Gift of Water

This wedding gift package costs €500 and includes 10 basic water kits for 10 families and a water pump for an entire community.
A basic family water kit contains buckets, collapsible water containers, soap and water purification tablets which can help 10 families during an emergency situation.
By giving a water pump, you can help provide clean and safe water for a whole community. A water pump not only provides drinking water, but stops women and children having to walk miles to fetch this most basic of human rights from afar.
Inspired Wedding Gift of HIV Prevention

This wedding gift package costs €775 and includes 10 HIV testing kits which will enable widespread diagnosis and treatment from this disease.
One of UNICEF’s priorities is to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS from mother to baby. You can help stop the advance of the virus with this basic screening test kit. If mothers know they are carrying the virus, they can get the medicine and care they need to stop them passing it onto their babies. This gift provides this basic screening kit for 500 mums to be.
Inspired Wedding Gift of Education

This wedding gift package costs €1000 and includes a tent for a temporary school in case of emergency or natural disaster; pencils for a whole school and 3 schools-in-a-box; gifts with all the essentials to keep children in education.
UNICEF’s tents can act as temporary schools in times of crisis and natural disaster. It is of great magnitude to know that this gift is helping children continue their education during emergency situations.
A school-in-a-box is a box full of basic education supplies that can help children carry on their education during emergency situations. The box contains books, pencils, erasers and scissors and even a radio, while the aluminium lid of the box doubles as a blackboard. Few gifts are as innovative as this – 3 temporary schools for 120 children.
The gift of 1000 pencils is also included in this wedding gift. These are one of the most important learning tools, you can give, as they enable children to write and draw.

Google to go head-to-head with Microsoft

The internet company is planning to launch the Google Chrome Operating System next year and will initially see it develop a number of netbooks for the market.
Vice president of product management Sundar Pichai and engineering director Linus Upson said on the company’s official blog, it would be “our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be”.
Google says it will be fast and lightweight and enable users to access the web within a few seconds. There will also be a focus on ensuring that users will not have to deal with viruses and security updates.
The internet company is currently working on the project with a number of manufacturers and the netbooks will be on sale from the second half of next year.
Microsoft, the software company, has long dominated the operating system market with Windows. Others that have tried but failed to dent its lead have been Apple’s Macintosh Operating System.

Drinkaware uses Jimmy Anderson in campaign

Posted in Uncategorized on July 7th, 2009

Charity Drinkaware has rolled out an online video with England cricket star Jimmy Anderson highlighting the dangers of excessive summer drinking.
The Drink Less, Miss Less campaign comes as the charity finds one in four adults drink more during summer months, and many are unaware of the effects on their body.
A series of high profile ambassadors are expected to support the campaign in the form of short films which will go out online, with the England cricketer being the first.
The video, which can be seen on the Drinkaware website, attempts to show the effects of drinking alcohol, which is a diuretic, in a humorous and light hearted way.
The Drinkaware site is also hosting a competition to win tickets to the Ashes as part of the campaign, as well as editorial around the tournament and behind the scenes content.
Last month the Home Office launched a viral campaign aimed at educating 18-24-year-olds about the dangers of drinking (nma.co.uk 8 June 2009), while Bacardi also rolled out a campaign featuring Michael Schumacher on the dangers of drink driving.

SPAR unveils £5m own-brand campaign

Posted in Uncategorized on July 7th, 2009

Convenience retailer SPAR UK is launching a £5m national campaign to support the re-launch of its own label ranges. The national chain says the campaign is its first ever own-brand campaign. Activity embraces television, radio, national press and women’s magazines and will seek to “improve consumer perception of SPAR own brand”, according to head of marketing support Adam Margolin.

Guinness Comp is out of this World

Posted in News on July 7th, 2009

Guinness is to send a fan into space as the stout marks its 250th year.
Three once-in-a-lifetime experiences have been offered to competition entrants as part of its celebration. One winner will win a trip into space, another to the depths of the ocean and the third a personal performance from The Black Eyed Peas.
The space experience gives one person the chance to become one of the first non-professional astronauts to venture into space with Virgin Galactic, the world’s first commercial spaceline owned by Richard Branson.
After training in New Mexico at Spaceport America, the winner will take a flight through the Earth’s atmosphere at around 2500mph.
The winner of the sea experience will travel to the Lofoten Islands in Norway with two friends where they will venture to the depths of the sea and drink Guinness in a deep sea bar.
The final winner and two friends will get an exclusive live performance by The Black Eyed Peas at a recording studio as part of their forthcoming world tour.
Meanwhile, Guinness is also to mark the date with an advertising campaign entitled To Arthur, which pays tribute to Arthur Guinness on the 250th anniversary of the signing of a 9,000 year lease on St James’ Gate Brewery.
The ad centres on Arthur in 1759 and follows him as he travels around the world. It was produced by Saatchi and Saatchi.

Sky Media Ireland Launches On-demand Advertising

Posted in News on July 7th, 2009

Sky digital has launched Green Button ‘Bookable’ advertising, a service which allows viewers to watch extended, or ‘long form’ advertising.
Built upon the same technology as the Green Button programme reminder service, advertisers will be able to encourage viewers to press the Green Button on their Sky remote to book longer-form content into their Sky Guide or to record content onto their Sky or Sky+HD set-top box.
Diageo’s Budweiser is the first campaign to take advantage of Green Button advertising in Ireland. To view 90 second exclusive video of Budweiser’s new Lyrics creative, viewers will be able to ‘press green’ during the commercial across Sky1, Sky News, Sky Sports 1&2 and Sky Sports News.
Green Button content can range from 2 minutes to 2 hours and the service also allows for the series-linking of advertising content, for those brands wishing to create episodic advertising.
Each piece of advertiser-created programming will be made available to Sky homes with standard digi boxes twice a day – viewers will be prompted with an on-screen reminder to watch a selected ad when it becomes available. In addition, in over a third of Sky homes that have Sky+ or Sky+HD, viewers will have the opportunity to have the ad stored on their Sky+ planner for playback at a time of their choosing.
Malcolm Murray, sales manager at Sky Media Ireland, said: “Green Button provides audiences who want a closer relationship with particular brands access to exclusive content which has been developed or funded by an advertiser.”

Fury as U2 claws back 90 degrees from 360 tour for Croke Park gigs

Posted in News on July 7th, 2009

U2 fans have expressed fury after it emerged the three Croke Park concerts in Dublin for its 360 tour will not be fully “in the round” as concerts at other venues around the world will be.
The “claw” stage at the centrepiece of the show wowed fans in Barcelona at its launch last week and allowed the band to effectively play to all sides of the all-seated Nou Camp stadium.
The stage was situated at one end of the stadium in Barcelona, and will be in the same position at Croke Park, with Hill 16 as a backdrop.
However, no seats will be fitted on the Hill and no tickets have been sold for the famous terrace — which means that the band will effectively be playing to 270 degrees of the Jones Road venue.
Fans took to internet message boards last night to complain. “Pretty annoyed to find out were only getting 270 of the stage,” one poster on boards.ie said.
“There is no reason why it can’t be in the middle.”
A seating chart for the concerts — which take place on the 24th, 25th and 27th of this month — shows that all stands at Croke Park will be filled, and there will be space for fans on the pitch.
Mammoth
However, there will be no standing space behind the stage, as it backs on to the Hill.
Extra tickets for the three Dublin dates — which had been sold out — go on sale 9am today.
The mammoth stage is 165ft tall, and takes up to four days to put together.
Croke Park officials deny that fans will be deprived of the full 360 experience and say that they will be able to see the stage from all angles, as the band originally intended.
